-
-
- Sound Filer is a graphical utility for browsing and
- auditioning sound files, and for converting between
- different sound file formats, audio sample data formats, and
- sampling rates. Currently supported sound formats are:
-
- +o _a_i_f_c AIFF-C file format
-
- +o _a_i_f_f AIFF file format
-
- +o _n_e_x_t NeXT/Sunr Format
-
- +o _w_a_v_e Microsoftr RIFF WAVE Format
-
- The supported data formats are raw signed or unsigned pulse
- code modulation, mu-law, and floating point.
-
- You can invoke Sound Filer from the command-line with the
- command _s_o_u_n_d_f_i_l_e_r.
-
- The command-line utility programs _s_f_i_n_f_o(1), _s_f_p_l_a_y(1), and
- _s_f_c_o_n_v_e_r_t(1) included the IRIS Digital Media Execution
- Environment 5.3 subsystem _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._a_u_d_i_o provide
- similar functionality.
-
- See the man page _s_o_u_n_d_f_i_l_e_r(1) or Sound Filer's on-line help
- for more information.
-
- The version of Sound Filer included in IRIS Digital Media
- Tools 5.5 is the same as the version that was shipped with
- the 5.3 release.

-
-
- +o The version of Sound Filer shipped with 5.2 and earlier
- releases wrote an incorrect value into the AIFF/AIFF-C
- FORM chunk size field in the file header. The FORM
- chunk size written into the header was 8 bytes greater
- than the actual chunk data size. This error generated
- AIFF files which were incompatable with several Mac
- applications. The 5.3 version of Sound Filer now

-
- This section lists known problems in Sound Filer and ways to
- work around them.
-
- +o Sound Filer does not allow you to convert from or to
- MPEG audio bitstream files. Use the new tool to convert
- between the AIFF-C/AIFF formats and MPEG-1 layer I or
- layer II audio bitstream files.
-
- +o When Sound Filer converts between AIFF-C and AIFF
- files, it deletes many of the auxiliary header fields,
- such as author string, sampler parameters, and
- application-specific data. To convert between AIFF-C
- and AIFF files, use the programs _a_i_f_f_2_a_i_f_c(1) and
- _a_i_f_c_2_a_i_f_f(1) provided with IRIS Digital Media Execution
- Environment 5.3.
-
- +o Sound Filer does not support the standard audio
- compression algorithms registered by Silicon Graphics
- for use with AIFF-C files. To compress or decompress
- AIFF-C audio data, use _a_i_f_c_c_o_m_p_r_e_s_s(1) and
- _a_i_f_c_d_e_c_o_m_p_r_e_s_s(1) provided with IRIS Digital Media
- Execution Environment 5.3. To directly play or record
- files that contain compressed audio data, use _p_l_a_y_a_i_f_c
- and _r_e_c_o_r_d_a_i_f_c, which are also supplied in
- _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._a_u_d_i_o.
-
- +o Sound Filer's convert window does not currently have a
- selection for big- or little-endian. AIFF-C, AIFF,
- Next/Sun, and raw data files are assumed to contain
- big-endian data. WAVE files are assumed to contain
- little-endian data. To read or write little-endian raw
- data, use _s_f_c_o_n_v_e_r_t.
